Game director Hidetaka Miyazaki explains in an IGN interview that Elden Ring is based off of Dark Souls from a gameplay standpoint but will create battle situations that are different from his other game. “However, that doesn’t mean that it plays out the same way. With a more open and vast environment, the way combat plays out becomes fundamentally different.”
Miyazaki hopes to bring an open-world adventure that is unique to FromSoftware, which in gamer terms most likely translates into, “you will die a lot.” After all, that has been a prevalent aspect of his games for years now. The new sprawling world will not have towns but players will be able to traverse it on horseback and the game will still focus heavily on RPG elements.
The game’s themes are eccentricity and the ambition of mankind. Considering ambition plays a huge part in George R.R. Martin’s stories, this collaboration has already begun to show his hand. The famous writer is responsible for creating the game’s mythos which, according to Miyazaki, represents the game world’s base.
