Introduction
With over 120 heroes to choose from, making the right choice for your game can be very hard. However, this is undoubtedly the most important decision that you need to make because if you don't pick the right hero for the situation, chances are that you will fail.
Generally speaking, picking "the right" hero depends heavily on what position you're playing. For most support players, it doesn't really matter what kind of hero they pick, as long as they can play it properly. Sure, there are some supports that can be great counters to core heroes such as Disruptor against Slark for example. Nevertheless, in most cases, the support can do his job very well even without countering the hero.
Needless to say, the situation is very different when you're playing a core, so we will take a look at just that.
Picking a mid hero
One of the biggest mistakes that people do is to pick a mid hero that just counters the other one, without seeing the big picture. A classic example of this is, let's say, picking Tinker against Storm Spirit. While it's true that Tinker demolishes Storm during the laning stage, once its over, Storm can absolutely rip through Tinker like a knife through butter.
That's why it's important to always think big when you pick your hero. Choose something that can also work with your team-mates, not only against the other mid hero.
Picking a carry
When it comes down to carries, the situation is a little bit different. Here, it all comes down to what kind of tactic are you planning on executing. Of course, doing a counter-pick is important, but it's definitely less important than the mid lane.
The best thing to do is to get a carry that can work well with the supports. Not only are you going to have an easier time, but you can also score multiple kills during the laning stage.
Picking an offlaner
Last, but definitely not least, we have the hardest position in Dota 2 - offlane. Here, picking the right hero depends entirely on your teams' tactics. It's pretty much impossible to pick a hero that can "counter" the enemy safelane, so always get a hero that has the potential to play with his team. There are many possibilities here, so just choose the hero that works best.
