Up until 2017, Dota 2 was the most popular game on Steam, with Counter-Strike: Global Offensive on the second place. Things changed with the release and growth of PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS which broke every record on Steam at that time.
A couple of weeks ago, a fan posted a gif with a visual representation of the games that were popular on Steam over time. You can see how PUBG rose in 2017, practically paving the way for Fortnite and the battle royale genre to grow in 2018. Despite the rise of PUBG, both Dota 2 and CS:GO kept going strong, only occasionally dropping in popularity, but relying on the core player base.
When in February of 2019 Respawn Entertainment released Apex Legends, many battle royale players decided to switch to the new game. This caused a drastic fall in the numbers of concurrent players in PUBG, which had already been declining.
This isn’t great news for Valve, since the PUBG players are abandoning Steam for EA's Apex Legends, but at least the Dota 2 fans have something to pride themselves with.
