QuakeCon last month gave us a lot of insight into DOOM Eternal and what to expect at launch, but the guys at id Software decided to share even more with us.
The developer released a video overview of DOOM Eternal’s multiplayer mode which does things differently from what fans are used to. The 2v1 "Battlemode" has the same fast, gory action from the campaign but pits two player-controlled demons against one slayer (to make it a fair fight).
There are five demons to choose from, each with their own special abilities and weapons, but the video only showcased three of them. The match ends only if the slayer is killed or manages to kill both demons before either of them can respawn. Meet the demons;
- The Revenant: This agile demon has a jetpack and can dash. It uses shoulder-mounted rockets and its special ability is a long range targeted rocket barrage.
- The Pain Elemental: This demon can fly and protect itself with a rechargeable soul shield but becomes an easy target when flying around unprotected.
- The Mancubus: This large demon uses heavy cannons and flamethrowers and should be used as a tank. With slow mobility, its smoke bombs are a great addition to its arsenal.
All demon players can summon AI-controlled lesser demons and lay traps. The slayer can make use of two portals to quickly travel across the map, but when in a demon's direct line-of-sight, the slayer is outlined from afar. Glory-killing and chainsawing demons will give the slayer health and ammo, while the available arsenal includes guns, mods and equipment, just like in the campaign.
The gameplay mechanics, proper teamwork between the demons and smart plays from the slayer will make for some very interesting matches. There are also upgrades between rounds to add to the excitement, like the slayer receiving a BFG or a demon summoning the Baron of Hell.
DOOM Eternal launches on November 22, with free additional demons and maps planned for release afterwards.
