Long before Rage 2 released, the communty knew that Denuvo "protection" would be installed into the game. People don't like this anti-piracy system so much not because law problems, but because it really affects games' performance, which has been proven more than once. Just recently, it was checked with Resident Evil 2 — it runs much better without DRM, as Capcom has accidentally leaked Denuvo-less copy of the game. The game showed an increase of more than 10 fps.
A similar case happened to Bethesda's game. Either the company somehow made a silly move, or it was some kind of cunning plan, but their own digital store launched Rage 2 without Denuvo, and the pirates did not fail to take advantage of it. They instantly grabbed the executive file and untied the product from online services, so the game almost immediately appeared on torrents.
Initially, the creators of Denuvo argued that it was almost impossible to bypass their protection. Then they recognized that piracy is inevitable, and their goal is only to delay the hacking so that the initial sales are successful. However, there are still games that are not cracked. These include Anno 1800, the protection of which lasts for a month and is still alive. Also, developers increasingly tied their games to online systems, which makes hacking impossible. For example, recent Mortal Kombat 11 and The Division 2.
