During the last Blizzcon, a representative of DeepMind Oriol Vinyals joined the StarCraft 2 keynote to discuss the progress of the AI researcher in this game. Now the organization is ready to share what it’s managed to achieve on a live stream.
Tomorrow (January 24th) at 19:00 the official StarCraft 2 channel on Twitch will and the DeepMind channel on YouTube will do a two-hour broadcast to show off what the developers have achieved.
Why are the AI researchers interested in StarCraft 2?
StarCraft 2 is a complex real-time strategy with asymmetrical balance. Winning this game poses a myriad of challenges since the AI needs to factor in things like the economy, scouting, micro, predicting the opponent’s strategies and so forth. Unlike Dota 2, which locked on the five characters played by five individual AIs (“agents”, as the researchers call them), in SC2 one player controls dozens of individual units.
If you are interested in StarCraft 2 AI research, you can go to SC2AI.net, where independent developers compete in an actual SC2 AI ladder. That community is very open, and if you have some skills, you can join in to compete and discuss bot-making with other enthusiasts. There is also a custom SC2 AI tournament organized by ESChamp where the best games between the bots are streamed on a weekly basis.
