Dark Souls features a wide range of weapons and different armor sets which have an immense impact on your gameplay. Having said that, the armor sets are definitely more important because, at the end of the day, they provide you with the needed defense in order to survive. In fact, the Armor in Dark Souls is a lot more important than in Demon's Souls. Ther are tons of different armors out there which give you unique attributes which can be crucial in certain boss fights.
Also, let's not forget that some type of armors can be upgraded while others can't. This makes your armor choice even harder because you need to be able to navigate around. Having said that, let's take a look at the top armor sets available in Dark Souls right now.
Set of Favor is the first item on our list because it offers amazing protection against pretty much everything in the game. What's more, not only does it include curse resistance, but it is also mid-weight, which makes it even better. Of course, let's also not forget about the memorable design, it is definitely something that will appeal to the vast majority of players.
In order to get it this item, you need to invade Lautrec's world and use the Black Eye Orb. When you do that, you need to avenge Anastacia and the set itself will be located in the same level as the Chamber of the Princess' bonfire. It is also important to remember that in order to upgrade this set, you need to get a Twinkling Titanite.
Smaug's Set provides excellent fire and lightning resistance and with its lightweight, it makes an excellent armor piece. Also something to consider is the fact that this set does not require an upgrade, which can be good and bad. In any way, it is definitely good news for all of you who don't want to invest that much time in general.
In order to obtain this set, you need to go to Dohmnall at Firelink, which is only possible after you kill the boss in this fight. It is definitely harder to obtain this item compared to some else on this list but it is worthwhile. After all, it is also one of the coolest looking armors in the game as well.
Unlike some of the other sets on this list, this one is only obtainable once you leave the Painted World of Ariamis.
The first thing to do is kill Xanthous in the snowfield littered with the large blocks. However, remember to be in human form while you are doing it, otherwise, it will not work. Once you kill him, the set will be located on a corpse on your way back through the Cross Breed.
This set can also be upgraded with a Twinkling Titanite, which will boost its power a lot. It will basically become lighter and better, with the only downside being the lack of curse resistance. In general, the gloves and the chest pieces are probably the best ones because they just provide amazing stats compared to other set pieces.
Unlike some of the other sets on this list, this one is obtainable very early on the game, if you have the Master Key of course. However, finding this key is easier said than done. But, if you by any chance manage to get your hands on it, go to the Blighttown and you will find the Crimson set in a chest located in the upper level just before the paddlewheel.
The Crimson Set is very light and it can also be upgraded with the Twinkling Titanite, making it very good for physical and magic damage resistance. Despite that, this set's strongest point has to be the curse resistance. Even at its base level, it still has plenty of it so that you don't have to worry about getting randomly killed.
Last, but definitely not least for some of the players out there, is the look of the set. It looks like a red riding hood on steroids.
When you are looking for a set, to begin with, you can't really get any better than the Pyromancer Set. Even though it provides a somewhat low physical defense, the high poison, and fire resistance as well as the low weight, make this set an amazing choice for all the players who are a lot into basically kiting your enemies until they die. In addition to that, this is the only starter set which comes with a curse resistance and good magic resistance as well. Similar to the others, it can also be upgraded with Titanite in the early game, which will make even more powerful.
In order to get it, go to the Blighttown and search in the area with the leech.
This set is somewhere in the mid-eight section and it is also possible to be upgraded with Titanite. Apart from the amazing physical damage defense, it also offers immense resistance to pretty much everything with the sole exception of a curse. However, unlike some of the other sets here, it is very hard to actually unequip it once you set it up.
Similar to the Pyromancer set, this one is also available early on. In order to get it, go to the Darkroot Basin into the area with the Giant Stone Knights. Once you go there, the set will be guarded by several enemies which you need to defeat. However, if you are having too many troubles, just grab the set and suicide.
This set is definitely a little bit harder to obtain but it is definitely worth the hassle. You can get it immediately after you purchase the Crest of Artorias and unlock the door in the Darkroot Garden. However, there will be plenty of enemies there which you need to be aware of. Luckily, you can just goo through them and get the stairs which will lead you an area filled with ruins where there will be a c chest. After that, you just need to open the chest, that is, if you are not dead from the enemies which will be following you.
Similar to some other sets, this one can't be upgraded. However, it provides amazing physical, magic, fire and lightning resistance, which makes this armor one of the best all-rounders in the game. In addition to that, since this item can be brought very early on, you can take advantage of it and use it in some of the early boss encounters.
The overall change to your game experience once you get the set is just insane. Not only are you able to withstand more damage, but you are also able to take down bosses as well. In fact, this is probably the best armor set when it comes down to the Anor Londo boss fight, which is probably the hardest in the game.
In order to get this item, you need to kill the Dragonslayer, which is one very hard boss to deal with. However, the reward is definitely worth it because this set offers amazing resistance to every single type of damage available in the game. In addition to that, it is also mid-wight and does not need to be upgraded. However, it is a bit expensive, which makes it an amazing choice for melee builds that do not want to get the heaviest armor possible in the game.
Oh, and it also looks pretty damn cool.
Unlike some of the sets mentioned above, you will be able to get this one later in the game, basically as soon as you make it through the utterly disgusting Catacombs. In order to get it, you need to be in human form and the Paladin Leeroy will start invading the Tomb of the Giants. The armor itself will be located on a corpse close to where you need to fight with Gravelord Nito.
This set provides one of the best all-around protection in the game. It basically has everything you need and even more. In addition to that, it can also be upgraded with the Twinkling Titanite which will further unlock more physical defense. What's more, this item is a lot lighter compared to the Stone Set, which makes it easier to wear if you are doing the so-called endurance build.
This is single-handedly the best light armor set available in the game right now. Not only does this set have a very high poison and fire resistance but it also provides a decent amount of physical and magic defense as well. What's more, it can also be accompanied by some other items from different sets which can make up for the lack of a curse defense.
Similar to other items out there, this one can't be upgraded, which is a shame really because it has one of the most bad-ass looks in the game. If you are a lot into different cosmetic changes, this set will definitely suit you a lot. In fact, I personally believe that some cosmetic changes can actually make you play better because they sort of motivate you to perform better while wearing a certain item.
Last, remember that you can not use this armor in certain fights such as the Quelaag boss fight for example. This is yet another proof why it is so powerful.
The Black Iron Set is simply the strongest set you can get in Dark Souls right now. Having said that, when you first stumble across this set, you might find it a bit dull and even bad, considering its initial stats. What's more, this set is very heavy, which is also another bad side of it, even though it is ligher compared to the Smough's and Stone's set. However, this set actually provides the best stas when it gets fully upgraded, even though it is definitely easier said than done.
Once you manage to get as much Twinkling Titanite as possible, The Black Iron Set will become a beast. In fact, when you star to do the upgrades, the Black Iron Gloves should be your number one priority because it just provides the best stats in the game. What's more, if you just have to choose just one item from the set, the Gloves are definitely the way to go because they will provide you with a massive protection against pretty much anything.
The Black Iron Set also has the highest physical damage reduction, very high fire protection and good protection against anything esle. Of course, it has some downfalls as well such as the lack of poise compared to others. However, it's decent weight as well as impressive stats make this set the overall champion.
It is important to note that the different melee builds need to increase their endurance in order to take full advantage of this set. However, other builds can try to experiment with different items from different sets in order to get maximum efficiency.
