Many game developers now consider it necessary to notify the players in advance about plans for the distribution model of future projects after the recent scandal around Metro Exodus’ tempopary unavailability on Steam. For example, CD Projekt Red has officially confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 won’t become an exclusive for Epic Games Store.
The developers noted that they aren’t talking about any agreement with Epic Games. Although this is a quite expected decision, the company owns the GOG digital store, but a direct statement will exclude a large number of questions. Also, after the recent poor start of Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales sales, the head of company Adam Kiciński said that this was primarily due to the temporary exclusivity of the product in GOG. There are too many fans of the Witcher series on Steam.
Unlike The Witcher, where many creatures were more massive than Geralt, in Cyberpunk 2077 the action takes place in the metropolis, where the details are significant. The developers want to make a separate emphasis on first-person gameplay, and they refused from a third-person view so that players can explore the open world of the game.
There are no CD Projekt Red’s games represented in the Epic Games Store now. Cyberpunk 2077 hasn’t yet received even an approximate release date, but the list of platforms still includes PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One without a single hint of the next generation of consoles. It remains to hope that this issue will be closed at E3 2019 in June.
