Activision has decided to improve its position in esports with its huge franchises, and, much like in the case of Overwatch, announced that it’s changing the way the Call of Duty World League works. The initial announcement was made during the latest earnings call.

Turns out, the company is going to enhance the League by incorporating city-based league franchises. Back in March, ESPN reported that Activision had started selling franchises to well-known world teams for a whopping sum of $25 million. We can’t confirm nor deny this information for now, but the official announcement of team franchises sheds the first light on the matter. Following the successful partnership with several esports organizations based in Atlanta, Dallas, New York, Paris, and Toronto, Activision has sold the first five Call of Duty teams to the very same companies. In other words, the creation of the professional Call of Duty League has started. This shift doesn’t feel like forced at all since Call of Duty became one of the major esports disciplines long ago. Tournaments draw a lot of interest, and with the new format, the league has all the chances to become even bigger in scale.

As of now, the Call of Duty esports scene is mostly represented by a but chaotic league and some random events, but soon we’ll witness the birth of a professional one. This is indeed a serious step, which will likely result in greater popularity of the discipline.
