Game director Masahiro Sakurai revealed the fifth character from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate first DLC Fighters Pass. Nintendo revisited one of its own franchises to complete the first season’s content.
Byleth is the protagonist of Fire Emblem: Three Houses, the SRPG which was released for the Nintendo Switch on July 26, 2019. Since you get to pick between a male and female version of the character in the game, both arrive in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as the fifth DLC fighter.
Fans did not see Byleth coming, as all the other DLC fighters were not from Nintendo IPs. Then there’s also the fact that a couple of Fire Emblem characters from different games in the franchise were already in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to start with. During the stream, it was a bit hilarious to see how many fans were first disappointed but then began to warm up to the character.
The 35-minute livestream gave a little information about the Fire Emblem series before showing off what Byleth can do. Armed with a sword, lance, and bow, their mobility is slow but they’ve also got great medium to long-range options.
Byleth comes to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on January 28 together with a new stage and music from Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Fighters Pass 2 was also revealed during the stream to have 6 DLC characters.
