2K announced today that Borderlands 3, its latest entry in the popular shooter-looter franchise has broken a number of records.
The game sold 5 million units in five days, which is 50% more units than Borderlands 2 sold when it was released. With this Borderlands 3 becomes the fastest selling 2K game. The franchise has also now made a billion dollars in revenue, the second 2K title to achieve such a feat.
"Borderlands 3 marks 2K’s highest percentage of digital sales for a cross-platform, cross-distribution title, with more than 70 percent of consumers purchasing the game digitally in its first five days of release," states 2k on its website.
The game received the highest pre-orders for a 2K game and on the Epic Games Store. Its console figures are also impressive but PC shows the strongest sales. Borderlands 3 became the most-watched game on Twitch on launch day and has since remained in the top-five of the category. 14 million hours of the game's content has been viewed on Twitch, which happens to be more than half the viewership Borderlands 2 has received in its seven years of existence.
President of 2K, David Ismailer said in a statement: “Borderlands 3’s incredibly successful launch is a result of the hard work and long standing partnership between Gearbox Software and 2K. We are immensely grateful to everyone who played a role in making the Borderlands series the global, pop culture phenomenon that it is today, including hundreds of developers at Gearbox and many who have made this their life’s work."
"We also want to thank the Borderlands community. Mayhem does not happen by itself, and their passion for the series is what drives us to make each game an amazing experience," he added.
The game is also a critical hit, with media outlets such as Destructoid, IGN and Forbes all giving it a 9/10 score. Borderlands 3 will grace Google Stadia with its presence when it launches on the platform in November 2019.
