When at the end of 2018 Blizzard pulled the plug on the Heroes of the Storm esports, the StarCraft 2 community began bracing for bad news as well. Eventually, the only truly bad thing that happened, was that Blizzard took a couple of months to announce the new seasons of WCS.
This weekend, the top non-Korean players will be competing in the third group stage of 2019 WCS Winter. At this point, 8 players from Europe (including Africa, Asia and Oceania) and Americas each will be competing in a round robin fashion.
The group stage will wrap up at the end of this week. On April 6 & 7, the top 6 players from each region will travel to the Blizzard Arena Los Angeles studio (the USA) and play in a gauntlet-style elimination bracket to determine the regional winner. The gauntlet-style of the bracket guarantees that the winner of round-robin will take at least the second place.
WCS Winter is a unique tournament in the history StarCraft 2 World Championship circuit because Blizzard hasn’t held such competitions before and is not planning to do it in the future. The rest of the WCS tournaments this year will be taking place in Ukraine (hosted by Starladder) and in Spain (hosted by DreamHack).
