The DC Extended Universe movie franchise has been living in the shadow of the former DC titles since its creation in 2013. Until recently even the most significant hits like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Wonder Woman couldn’t compete with Christopher Nolan’s Batman films.

Very soon this might change as Aquaman is a box office superhit keeping #1 in the theaters worldwide for the second weekend straight. The film has already made over $750 million and is on track to surpass $900 million during the theatrical run. The gross earnings of The Dark Knight Rises are $1.09 billion which at this point is a realistic target for the Jason Momoa-starring film.

Aquaman has already surpassed Man of Steel, Justice League, and Suicide Squad with gross revenue of $668 million, $657.9 million, and $746.8 million respectively. Batman v Superman and Wonder Woman with $873.6 million and $821.8 million should be easily surpassed this week.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie is doing very good on international markets and managed to gain $260 million in China alone. Exit polls indicate that the Aquaman appeals to the people of very diverse cultures and almost all ages.

Aquaman might become the third DC superhero movie that cleared $1 billion globally. There are only eight superhero movies that have done it, and six of them belong to the Marvel Universe. The DC movies that have done it are The Dark Knight Rises and The Dark Knight.
