Australian and New Zealand fighting games players can look forward to a brand new tournament series powered by streaming platform Twitch, while the company aims to bring the different groups of players together to help elevate opportunities and professionalize local esports scene.
According to the press release, local FGC groups CouchWarriors, OzHadou, and Standing Fierce have developed a new points structure, where players can from now on monitoring ongoing performance on a unified ladder. The best players from StreetFighter V, Tekken 7 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in three Australian states and New Zealand will earn the spot to participate in qualifiers to the region’s top-tier annual event, Battle Arena Melbourne (BAM).
Daniel Chlebowczyk from CouchWarriors described a new partnership with Twitch with the following statement:
While it’s led by CouchWarriors and Twitch under the deal, we’ve been able to support OzHadou, the Sydney-based fighting group, and Standing Fierce, the New Zealand group. They’re all on board here and that’s allowed their channels to become partnered on Twitch, which allows them to go to the front page when they’re running their events.
The ANZ partnership lead at Twitch, Lewis Mitchell also added:
Instead of it just being ‘you have your tournament here, and we have our tournament there and we’ll see you all at BAM’, we felt there was a story to tell,” said Mitchell. “Here’s some of the best in Australia and potentially someone from the outback could end up on the stage at Evo. That’s the dream scenario here, but until we saw how we could get a points umbrella going there was no real way of that ever happening.
The new series of the tournament BAM Path Evo will run each week, leading up to BAM11, which will run from May 17-19 in Melbourne. The top players will ten earn a ticket to Evo Las Vegas.
