Riot Games is planning to nerf Akali with the upcoming patch 9.3. The changes are currently being tested, and there is a good chance they will go through.
The developers decided to remove her ability to remain cloaked in proximity to towers. This skill has been very frustrating to the LoL players who hate laning vs Akali. On top of that, Akali also loses the heal given by her Q procks. In combination the nerfs should impede the champion in the early stages of the game, without impacting the late-game too much.
Why the nerf is a bit controversial
The decision to nerf Akali at this point doesn’t seem logical because she isn’t in a strong place, to begin with. According to the Champion.gg stats, the character’s win rate is on the 42nd place in the rating with the 48 meta champions. The stats take into consideration lower leagues, meaning that approaching pro-levels Akali could be much stronger, but we don’t have information regarding it at this time.
There is a chance that Riot Games decided to nerf Akali because the fans got too frustrated with the hero, but that sets up a slippery road. No one wants to play a game with lopsided balance because players were uncomfortable with one of the spells.
Most likely, the developers have their reasons to nerf Akali with a bigger picture in mind.
