Time to feel old, brothers and sisters. The spectacular podracing game Star Wars Episode I: Racer released 20 years ago. The title was one of a kind, drew a lot of attention, and got a well-deserved cult status among its fans. The game obviously deserves an official HD remake, but while Disney is busy milking the cinematic universe, fans have to do all the dirty work.
Thanks to the devoted fan and modder under nickname Rob Jin, we now have a fully-functional demo of the game recreated in Unreal Engine 4. Funnily, Rob Jin never intended to create this project – his work started as a test to learn the engine. 10 months later, and the podracing demo is actually playable and absolutely free for everyone to enjoy. Moreover, this is not a lonely visual tour across the iconic Tatooine racing track – you can compete with AI. There’re some non-critical technical issues, but nothing exceptionally serious to prevent you from having fun.
Rob Jin also made a fan CGI trailer for the game, and you can watch the video below – as well as a demonstration of the gameplay. It indeed looks and feels just like original Star Wars Episode I: Racer, so we highly recommend you to succumb to nostalgia. Here’s the link to download the demo.
