Metro Exodus has become a temporary exclusive for the Epic Games Store, as you already may know. It will appear on Steam (and no longer a novelty) in a year. Some fans, disappointed by the sudden move of the game to the different client, offered to boycott the project and even “threatened” to use piracy copies instead of buying the game legally. Players deliberately underestimated the ratings and brought down a massive wave of hate on previous games in Steam.
One of the employees under the nickname “scynet” suggested on the forum that if PC-version of Metro Exodus will sell badly, then the next part of the series may become exclusive to consoles:
“I watched the [talking]. Impressions are twofold. On the one hand, leaving from Steam is ambiguous, so no one has done it so sharply (as far as I can tell). This is new, which could cause rejection. Yes, and such a move pulls the need to install an Epic launcher, which could cause some inconvenience to the players, and therefore cause discontent.
On the other hand, the reaction of a specific category of players (only torrents and all that) is hardly adequate. It seems that people didn’t want to play, just waited for a reason to pour out their poison. It turns out that we (the developers) have been hard and painful, with losses, trying to do something special for years, but a specific category of players believes that our work is not worth even a couple of minutes to install the launcher. Naturally, it is their life and their right, but then what do they care about Metro? Obviously, it is not interesting to them. I can only say that they were not our players either, they are not interested in our work, which means that, for example, the opinion of such people is not interesting for me either. What is the point for me (and not only me) personally to listen to their opinion?
But! Let’s consider the situation more in-depth. Someone says that if they tell sh*t about Exodus and the previous games in the series, it will make the world better, thinking that it can put greedy developers in place. I can answer to this that as a last resort, if all PC players announce a boycott to Metro, then the next part, if it does, definitely won’t be on the PC. Better or worse, decide it for yourself. I feel sorry for the loyal fans, yes. But my assessment of the work done personally by me and my friends and colleagues won’t change this. I’m sure that almost everyone who pours this dirt to the network is also incapable of a bit of what we have done and hopefully do more. And that means they have no idea what they are talking about."
Don’t forget that this message reflects the personal position of the developer, not the opinion of the entire company or publisher.
It seems that the situation doesn’t quite satisfy the author of the franchise Dmitry Glukhovsky. He posted a picture of the train "Aurora" in his Instagram and the following text: “Apparently the Steam was not enough for our steam train.”
The author deleted his comment later and answered to some users: “I’m writing stories, not making business decisions.” and “What is the problem to buy on Epic?”
Metro Exodus publisher couldn’t stay away from the scandal and tweeted an explanation yesterday that the responsibility for moving the game to the Epic Games Store lies entirely on the publisher and the developers have no relation to this.
“Our decision to partner with Epic Games was based on the goal of investing in the future of the series and our development partner at 4A Games.”
Let's hope that those players who have raised the whole wave of negativity around really talented developers will calm down and start to leave only positive feedback after the game’s release. Metro Exodus’ release will be held on February 15 on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
Besides, we don’t see any problem with just downloading another launcher instead of “I want all the games in one place as a collection”. Also, the difference in profits will benefit future projects. Guys, be reasonable.
Express your opinion on this situation in the comments, let's discuss.
